We will hike to the idyllic herdsmen settlement on the Velika Planina plateau and enjoy the magical meadows, peace and breathtaking views over the peaks of the Kamnik-Savinja Alps. The plateau consists of several alpine meadows that are spread out over a high Karst plateau north-east above Kamnik and that can be reached either by foot or by a cable-car and a double-seat lift. After meeting at the lower station of the cable-car to Velika Planina in the valley we will take a cable-car to the upper station and then a double-seat lift to the highest point of the plateau called Gradišče (1.666 m above sea level). From there we will hike to the herdsmen settlement, stop at one of the huts to try some cheese (only possible during pasture season when shepherds and cows are there) and walk to the Chapel of Snow Mary. We will visit Preskar cottage - museum, the only cottage which is even today distinct from the other cottages with its shape, size and modestly decorated interior. On our way back we will stop at Veternica cave, have some lunch (optional) at one of the mountain inns (have you ever tasted jota, ričet or kislo mleko?) and then return to the valley the same way. Breath in. Breath out. Repeat. And take the whole experience into your soul. Uniqueness of Velika Planina is one of the oldest and best preserved herdsmen settlements of its kind in Europe which managed to keep the individual pasturing as it was. During the pasture season (that only lasts from the middle of June till the middle of September) visiting Velika Planina means a journey back in time, to the pristine life of the herdsmen. Walking the vast meadows that are spread among wooden huts where herdsmen spend summer with their cattle (and offer cheese or sour milk), feels like entering a fairytale.
