The building of the former Marfa special prison No. 16 of the MGB of the USSR
Detailed description
The Alexander-Mariinsky Orphanage in Marfina was built by order of Catherine the Great in 1764 for the children of rural priests. The children were taught carpentry and bookbinding, church singing, and future seminarians. A temple was built on the territory. All the buildings were made of red brick. In Soviet times, a shelter for street children was organized in the building, which existed until the war itself. In 1947, Prison No. 16 was opened. Solzhenitsyn served his sentence in this prison for three years. The time spent in prison became the basis for writing the novel “In the first circle.” The scientific Laboratory No. 8 has also started operating here to conduct research in the field of encryption of telephone communications and radio intelligence. Later, the laboratory grew into an advanced defense enterprise. Captured German specialists worked at the enterprise. Many important secret developments in the field of satellite and space communications, nuclear suitcases, and government turntables were carried out here. Currently, the building has an exhibition of the Museum of cryptography, which tells about the means of communication from ancient times to the present.
