Menshikov Palace
Detailed description
The Menshikov Palace was built from 1710 to 1727. The palace was originally designed by the Italian-Swiss architect Giovanni Maria Fontana, but in 1713 it was replaced by the German architect Gottfried Johann Schedel. The palace was built in the Peter the Great Baroque style and is one of the first stone buildings in the city. The palace has a symmetrical layout and a high lobby with arcades. A variety of materials are used in the interior decoration of the palace walls. There are tiles, expensive types of wood, tapestry and silk wallpaper, decorative paintings and moldings. Now the palace building serves as one of the departments of the Hermitage.
