Commandant 's Wharf
Detailed description
The wooden Commandant's pier, facing the Nevsky Gate of the fortress, was built in 1716. From here, the prisoners of the fortress set off along the Neva River, ready for hard labor and death. The boat of the commander of the fortress was moored here.
In 1767, the construction of a stone pier was planned, and ten years later, by order of Tsar Catherine II, the fortress of Peter and Paul was lined with granite. The three-span stone arches leading to the steps leading down to the Neva River are equipped with railings and ice cutters.
