The Commandant 's house
Detailed description
The commandant's house is located between Peter and Paul Cathedral and Naryshkin Bastion. The first house for the commandant of the fortress was erected in 1704, it was a wooden structure and was intended exclusively for housing. Then the building was rebuilt several times, and in 1893, a second floor was erected over the service wing, and the building acquired the appearance in which it can now be represented. The commandant's house was made with a focus on the Baroque style. The commandants of the fortress lived and worked in this building at various times. Their duties were the management of the serfdom and the garrison, and the most important function was the supervision of prisoners. Nowadays, there is also an exposition about the history of the construction of St. Petersburg inside the house.
