Naryn Kala Fortress
Detailed description
The fortress from the time of the Persian Empire is connected to the Caspian Sea by a double wall and was built to close the so-called Caspian Gate. It is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. Its name in medieval Persian means "fortress illuminated by the sun." Since the Middle Ages, the walls of the Derbent fortress have also been called the walls of Alexander the Great because of the legend that they were built by the great conqueror Alexander the Great. In fact, Alexander the Great never visited these places. The irregular fortress has an area of 4.5 hectares. The fortress measures about 180 meters wide and 255 meters long. The walls are reinforced with small towers (20-30 meters apart) and a turret in the southwest. The steep slopes of the mountain provide additional protection on three sides.
