Solovetsky Stone
Detailed description
The Solovetsky Stone, a memorial in honor of the victims of the communist ruling regime in the USSR, was brought from the village of Solovetsky and installed near the Peter and Paul Fortress in 2002. During the Soviet period, the Solovetsky Archipelago was home to a concentration camp and then a special-purpose prison. The base for the monument was equipped back in 1990. The stone itself is a large granite boulder weighing 10.5 tons and 1.7 meters high. The authors of the project were artists Yuli Andreevich Rybakov and Evgeny Ilyich Ukhnalev, each in his own time, who served 6 years for political "crimes". Rallies are currently being held near the Solovetsky Stone, various anti-government actions and pickets are being held.
