Theater of Dionysus

The Dionysus Theater is an ancient theater building in Athens, one of the most ancient theaters in the world, built in the 5th century BC. Performances in the theater took place twice a year during the Minor and Great Dionysias. During the Great Dionysians, theatrical competitions were held between the authors of tragedies, comedies and satires. In 326-325 BC, the theater was reconstructed, accommodating up to 17 thousand spectators. The theater was devoid of roofing, the actors, the choir and the audience were located in the open air. During the Roman era, the theater was rebuilt, including for circus and gladiatorial performances. The ruins of the theater were discovered in 1862 by German archaeologists, the project of partial reconstruction of the theater was developed by Konstantinos Boletis.
