Hadrian 's Arch
Detailed description
Hadrian's Arch is a triumphal arch in Athens, built in 131 in honor of Emperor Hadrian. Located on Amalis Avenue, it exits the old town into the Roman part, built by Hadrian. The arch is 18 meters high and is decorated with pilasters and Corinthian columns. The inscription on the architrave reads: "This is Athens, the ancient city of Theseus," and on the opposite side: "This is not the city of Theseus, but of Hadrian." The arch is entirely made of Pentelian marble, quarried on Mount Pendelicon. In 2006-2008, restoration work was carried out, including chemical cleaning of the monument's surface. Hadrian's Arch is one of the attractions of Greece and is under state protection.
