The wall of the Donskoy Monastery
Detailed description
The Donskoy Monastery is a Russian Orthodox Stavropol monastery in Moscow, founded in 1591 on the site of Gulyai-Gorod, Russia. After repelling the attack of the Crimean Khan Gaziy II Giley, in 1745 it came under the direct jurisdiction of the Holy Synod, and before the revolution of 1917 there were six of them in the Russian Empire. It was one of the monasteries of the Holy Synod and a monastery of the first class. Like other monasteries in the Bolshevik-controlled regions of Russia, it was officially closed in 1918, but continued to operate without official permission from the authorities until the late 1920s, when it was restored in 1991.
