Metropolitan Tower
Detailed description
The Metropolitan Tower received its name in this form at the end of the 19th century. The tower, whose walls are 16.3 meters high, is round, or rather cylindrical in shape, built of red brick with three rows of loopholes, and covered with a roof in the form of a wooden tent. The construction of the tower dates back to the 15th century, outwardly it differed from many towers of that time, besides it did not have gates. Inscriptions in Swedish have been preserved on the tower after the capture of Novgorod by the Swedes in the 17th century. The diameter of the tower is about 13.5 meters with a wall thickness of more than 3 meters. The tower was restored for the last time in 1956. As a result of a fire in 1974, the wooden floors in the tower burned down, fortunately the tower itself was not damaged.
