Rector 's Wing
Detailed description
In 1794, a three-story wing was built as a drinking establishment commissioned by merchant M. T. Pushilov. About half a century ago, the university bought the building. The building was completely rebuilt in 1840-1842 by the architect A. F. Shchedrin, who executed the facades in the style of Peter the Great Baroque. The rector's wing of the university was one of the first examples of neo-Baroque, which was created in St. Petersburg.
The facades have two colors, while the main volume of the building is located in the depth of the site. The front part of the facade faces the Neva River and is decorated with weathervanes. The rector's wing of the University in St. Petersburg is also known for the fact that in 1841-1863 the writer P. A. Pletnev, who was the rector of the university, lived here. In 1876-1883, A. N. Beketov was rector, a famous Russian botanist. His grandson, Alexander Blok, was born in this place on November 28, 1880. The Rector's wing of the University now houses office space.
