Cathedral of the Saviour of the Miraculous Image in the Winter Palace
Detailed description
The Great Church of the Winter Palace was the house church of the Imperial family in St. Petersburg. After the abdication of Nicholas II, it was nationalized by the Provisional Government and became one of the halls of the State Hermitage Museum to visit. It is located in the southeastern part of the second floor of the Winter Palace, on the site of the church attached to the palace of Anna Ioannovna. Its interiors were restored by architect V. P. Stasov in 1839, restoring the original Rococo designed by Francesco Bartolomeo Rastrelli. The palace church was different from traditional temples, as it was created in the same style as the palace hall. Its interior was divided into refectory, dome and altar parts, and each detail was carefully worked out by the architect.
