Detailed description

The building of the district court in the city of Tula is an architectural monument of the late 18th century. It is a large stone two-storey L-shaped building with a basement. The decor of the facades is simple, decorations are added by sandriks on the windows of the second floor. The building was built as part of the reform of local government to create the judicial system of Tula province. Of the interiors, only the front door, side stairs and several offices on the ground floor have been preserved. The second floor was completely redeveloped after the revolution. It is noteworthy that a large period of time in the life of the great Russian writer Leo Tolstoy was associated with the judicial system of the Tula region. Leo Tolstoy took an active part in the establishment of new institutions of justice, and was an honorary justice of the peace. Some materials of criminal cases formed the basis of his works such as: drama “The Power of Darkness”, the short story “The Living Corpse”, the novel “Sunday". The building has not changed its purpose for centuries and today it also houses a court.
