Detailed description

This building was built between 1909 and 1912 by a famous Soviet architect. It belonged to a wealthy local merchant, G.A. Tarasov. This is not just a manor, but a whole complex of buildings that forms an asymmetrical enclosed square around a green courtyard with a fountain. In the construction of the house, the architect adhered to such a style as the Italian Renaissance. The building has two floors: the first one seems noticeably higher than the second one. There is no entrance to the house from the street, it is located in an alley. It is believed that the architect borrowed the structure and design of the facades of the Palazzo Tiene in Vicenza for the design of this building. It is a strict symmetrical stone building. Between the floors, you can see the inscription in Latin: "GABRIELUS TARASSOF FECIT ANNO DOMINI...." ("Gabriel Tarasov made the Lord's summer..."). The Institute of Africa of the Russian Academy of Sciences is now located there.
