Palace Square
Detailed description
The Palace Square is rightfully considered the heart of St. Petersburg. It bears its name due to the Winter Palace, which was designed by F. B. Rastrelli and built in the middle of the 18th century. The greenish-white tones of the building give it the sophistication and airiness characteristic of the Baroque style.
The square is a magnificent architectural ensemble, in addition to the Winter Palace, which includes the Main Headquarters and the Alexander Column. The building has a semicircular shape with a large arch in the center, decorated with the sculpture "Chariot of Glory", which depicts warriors and Nika– the goddess of Victory.
The final chord of this composition is the Alexander Column, located in the center of the square. It owes its name to Emperor Alexander I. The figure of an angel trampling a snake with a cross, a symbol of the victory of good over evil, crowns the column.
