The Palace of Chancellor A.A. Bezborodko
Detailed description
The palace is an architectural monument of the 18th century.
In 1781, in the Admiralty part of the city, the prominent statesman A. A. Bezborodko acquired two adjacent plots with detached buildings.
In 1783, Alexander Andreevich Bezborodko began rebuilding buildings. The architect J. Quarenghi connected the buildings with a central wing and built them on one floor. The facades of the palace have assumed classical forms.
The palace was admired for its huge collections of paintings, sculptures, bronzes, porcelain and exquisite furniture.
Other alterations to the building followed later. In 1797, the construction of a Large State Hall began, which has been preserved to this day.
In 1924, the Museum of Folk Communication was opened in the former palace of A. A. Bezborodko. During the Great Patriotic War, the building was severely damaged and major repairs and restoration were carried out in 1946-1955. The first post-war exposition was opened in 1949.
