St. Sophia Cathedral
Detailed description
The cathedral is located on the territory of the Novgorod Kremlin. It is certainly an architectural monument. It was restored in 1900, however, like many churches of that time, it was closed in 1929. For a long time it housed an anti-religious museum. The temple was badly damaged during the Second World War. After the war, it was restored and became one of the departments of the Novgorod Museum-Reserve. In 1991, the temple was returned to the faithful, and in 2007, the restoration of all the domes was completed. Nowadays, the snow-white cathedral with a gray roof and the same domes, with the exception of the largest and tallest dome covered with gilding, pleases the townspeople and believers.
