The Rakhmanov Almshouse
Detailed description
The story began in 1900, when the Moscow City Duma allocated a plot of land on Kaluzhskaya Street, opposite Neskuchny Sad, where a hospital and orphanage complex was built in 1902-1903. There was an orphanage and a hospital here, with living quarters for doctors and staff, outbuildings, ice rooms, and a chapel in the back. All buildings were designed in the neo-Russian style, the hospital and sanatorium were equipped with modern equipment, including water supply, sewerage, electric lighting, ventilation and steam heating. Schools were also organized for children. In Soviet times, the poorhouse was abolished, and the former buildings housed the sick. Shortly after the revolution, the house church and chapel were closed and converted into a hospital; in 1924, the hospital was renamed the 5th Gradskaya Clinical Hospital. Today it is called the Central Clinical Hospital of St. Alexy, Metropolitan of Moscow.
